AI Chatbots & Virtual Agents (Customer-Facing)

This is the category most people picture when they hear 'AI customer support': a chat widget on a website or in-app that talks directly to the end customer, usually before any human is involved. Under the hood it works by retrieving answers from a company's knowledge base, FAQ pages, or past tickets (a technique called retrieval-augmented generation) and phrasing them naturally in the brand's voice, rather than following the old-style rigid decision-tree chatbot flows. Modern versions can also read account or order data and take limited actions like tracking a shipment or resetting a password, then hand off to a human agent when the request is too complex, sensitive, or the customer asks for a person. The main buying decision is resolution rate (what percentage of conversations the bot actually closes without escalation) versus cost model, since many vendors charge per resolved conversation rather than a flat fee — meaning the bill grows as the bot gets better. These tools are a good starting point for teams with high volumes of repetitive, low-complexity questions (order status, returns policy, account basics) and a reasonably well-organized knowledge base to train the bot on; without decent source content, even the best bot will give vague or wrong answers.
